Those certainly seemed strange words for a dying man to say to his favorite nephew — but no stranger than the fact that a cantankerous, eccentric millionaire like Otis Canby would suddenly die just as he is about to change his will. After all, a lot of people in Adamsport stand to profit from the old man's death. Sixteen-year-old Lester Cunningham and Wally Brenner decide to investigate, and soon discover that the real mystery is the whereabouts of the secret part of the Canby fortune — gold old Canby is known to have bought and hidden away.

With little more to go on than a crossword puzzle clue and a seemingly meaningless list of paintings, Lester and Wally set out to crack the case — and find out much more than they had bargained for.
