La psiquiatría más allá de sus fronteras. Instituciones y representaciones en el México contemporáneo

En los estudios sobre la historia de la psiquiatría en México se han priorizado dos campos temáticos: la dinámica de las instituciones de atención, principalmente el Manicomio General “La Castañeda”, y el ejercicio de la clínica psiquiátrica. Con el objetivo de comprender la compleja relación que la psiquiatría tuvo con la sociedad mexicana a lo largo del siglo XX, en este libro se reúnen cinco trabajos que exploran la historia de dicho saber más allá de las fronteras clínicas y hospitalarias. Cada uno ha sido elaborado con fuentes muy diversas, cuyo eje fundamental está en la necesidad de comprender la psiquiatría no sólo como un saber ejercido por especialistas en espacios académicos y hospitalarios. Por el contrario, la prioridad fue analizar dicho saber a partir de una doble interacción: de los psiquiatras con otras instituciones, no necesariamente médicas, y de las ideas científicas con los imaginarios populares sobre la locura. Dos rutas que nos permitieron comprender la psiquiatría más allá de sus fronteras.

The study of psychiatry in Mexico has focused chiefly on two subjects: the dynamics within psychiatric institutions, primarily the Manicomio General “La Castañeda”, and on the practice of clinical psychiatry. With the intention of understanding the complex relationship that psychiatry had with the Mexican society throughout the twentieth century, this book brings together five works, which explore the history of said subject beyond its clinical and healthcare settings. Each of them has been put together using very diverse sources, but the fundamental axis remains the need to understand psychiatry not just as knowledge restricted to specialists in academic and medical contexts. On the contrary, the priority of this book was to analyze psychiatry focusing on two interactions: the one between psychiatrists and other institutions —not necessarily medical ones—, as well as the one between scientific thought and the popular idea of madness; two courses which made it possible for us to understand psychiatry beyond its limits.
