Warring bands of marauders ravaged the land. Young Christopher has served both sides, as squire to Saxon and Celt. Only fifteen, he had waded with the knights into battle - into that red sea of blood and bone - handing them broadsword and lance.

Now Christopher knelt in the place on honor. The man who stood over him was said to be the chosen king, who would unite the land at last. And perhaps it was true.

The sword with which he touched Christopher's shoulder had a high and hopeful gleam. It even had a name - Excalibur.
