Something has happened in Europe. Committed to pacifist principles, Terry and Hugh retreat from their home to the remote highlands of Scotland, prepared to eke a simple existence together whilst the fighting resolves itself far away.

Encouraged by Terry, Hugh begins a journal to note down the highs and lows of this return to nature. Between the joys of foraging for berries and the rugged reality of killing for meat, it seems life in the wilderness may offer consolation for the fugitive couple. But as the sound of gunfire by night grows louder, the grim prospect of encroaching war threatens to invade their isolation and erode any hope for lasting peace.

Macpherson’s speculative novel of future war was first published in 1936, just three years before the outbreak of the Second World War in Europe.
