This striking collection of black and white photography is based upon a traveling exhibition of the same name which premiered in Charlotte, NC in June 2002. This ongoing project is a photographic study of the spiritual and physical beauty of the black women that inhabit our everyday lives. It is an attempt to see in a new light and a new way the beauty of a largely unnoticed group of women. The exhibition has since traveled to a number of cities including Nashville, TN, Pittsburgh, PA, Knoxville, TN, and Durham, NC has been enthusiastically received by the public and the media. The Women Of A New Tribe project has been call "Powerful", "Uplifting" and "Long Overdue". The release of the book will occur during the exhibition run at the Birmingham Civil Right Institute in Birmingham, AL. The exhibition is currently running in Knoxville TN and will open in Birmingham at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute on 7 September 2007.
The 208 page book contains 100 meticulously crafted black and white images done in a style reminiscent of the high-glamour photography of 1930s and 1940s Hollywood. The images include photographs of Black American Women in many of their infinite manifestations. It is intent of the author that the women portrayed be representative everyone's mothers, daughters, sisters, students, coworker and friends. Particularly striking are the portraits in the chapter entitled Tribal Beauty. In this chapter, the women are photographed with props in "tribal" type attire.
