Two years ago, Beth's husband and daughter were killed in a horrific car crash. Now they're back, visiting her in the night and haunting her every waking moment.

As Beth struggles to work out whether the ghosts are real or figments of her imagination, her neighbor John - a world-famous horror writer who mostly stays out of the spotlight - offers to help. He's convinced that ghosts don't exist, but when Beth's experiences take a darker turn, even he is forced to admit that he might be wrong.

Finally, as Beth discovers the truth about the ghostly visitations, she learns that some of the most fundamental aspects of her life are not as they seem. Did her family really die two years ago? Why does John seem so keen to make sure that she stays close to the house? And what is the horrific end-game being plotted by the force behind all the horrors that Beth has experienced?
