Vampire Illyana Dakanova fears her "daughter" Adriana Dupre's quest for vengeance against those who manipulated her into dealing with the Shadowdance will only lead to her death. When she refuses to help Adriana in her fool's crusade, Adriana leaves her.

Illyana falls into a deep depression.

A century later, Illyana picks a fight with the Japanese underworld, hoping their supernatural assassin Keiko will finally end her.

As all seems lost for Illyana, sorcerer Makeda Arsi appears to her and offers a way to win back Adriana. However, this will entail manipulating Adriana into dealing with the Shadowdance -- the very reason Adriana left in the first place.

"A Reason to Live" takes place a few months before the events of "By Virtue Fall," the first song in the "Shadowdance" action/ urban fantasy saga. It's a free ebook available in Kindle and Nook formats.
