Shig Sato is a husband and a Tokyo police Inspector.

Neither fact will remain true for much longer.

Sato's beloved wife, Miki, is terminally ill, and he is facing his last month with the department. But he's been assigned to Azabu Police Station and partnered with his old friend, Detective Ken Abe. Then he gets a call to a Roppongi jazz club. A beautiful young waitress has been murdered. Her boyfriend, an American Marine, is missing, and the club owner is nowhere to be found. Sato knows that anytime a GI is involved in a murder, it's political dynamite. Finding the American is his first priority - then he learns the club owner is the son of prominent crime boss Ses Fujimori.

Ties between the Satos and Fujimoris go back a generation. It’s something Sato has kept secret during his career, especially after he asked for Fujimori's help solving a case early in his career. Fujimori agreed, knowing Sato would be in his debt.

With his son now a murder suspect, what will Fujimori demand in return for his cooperation? What price will Sato pay to bring a young woman’s killer to justice?
