In late Victorian London, Mrs. Hermione Cheney writes sensational novels which titillate and scandalize the reading public. But the aristocratic authoress cannot rely solely upon her imagination for inspiration. When she begins work on a new novel, set in the exotic locale of the French colony of Algeria, she sends her son Nigel there on a mission. Nigel's task is to explore Algiers and research the background material which his mother needs for her book. But she also expects him to acquaint himself with the vice and depravity which no doubt exist in the exotic city of Algiers, and to report back to her, so she can incorporate this lurid material into her novel. Nigel travels to Algiers, accompanied by his loyal valet. He meets and befriends a worldly French lieutenant who is stationed in the city. Nigel also finds a local guide who is adept at meeting the needs of foreign gentlemen. The four men explore the city and its carnal pleasures. When he returns to London, the once-innocent NIgel has become an experienced man of the world. Mrs. Cheney considers his mission to have been a complete success. She now has plenty of sensational material to incorporate into her novel. But there are some things a man might do while on a trip abroad which he wouldn't want to confess to his mother. Nigel and his valet discreetly keep some of their Algerian adventures a secret, as their relationship of master and servant takes a surprisingly intimate turn.
