The story of a man's sheltered youth, his betrayal, defeat, fall and regeneration through the sharing of common suffering and common service, runs parallel with the experiences of England in the period 1890-1945. This is the second volume in the West Riding (Yorkshire) trilogy that began with 'Inheritance'. It traces the rise of Henry Morcar from apprentice designer to successful mill owner. It was part of the Granada TV serial that was screened in the late 1960s.
