“This is the journal of Captain Butch Matalan. If you can read this then send help. We are stuck on the other side of the universe and don’t know what to do. My crew and I have brain-stormed, thought-blazed, cell-danced, mind-riffed, head-jazzed and skull-sprayed but the solution matrix is still empty.”
Every great space captain faces challenges. Captain Kirk had to battle Klingons and engine difficulties. Captain Picard fought the Borg and the Romulans. But neither of them faced the kind of challenges that Captain Butch Matalan of the British Empire Space Service faces on a daily basis.
Outsourced engineering and security arrangements with Regency Logistics, British Empire data protection and health and safety regulations, a woefully inadequate mission statement and a lack of proper mood space on board all made life extremely difficult. Then it happened - the space accident that left them stranded on the other side of space.
These are the voyages of the SS Pioneer in the year 2777. There are wars to avert, planets to save, shape shifting monsters to hunt down, Nazis to escape from and even an afterlife to ponder as senior budget holder Butch Matalan, his second in command Carol Raymond and mineralogist John H Manly go further into space than anyone has gone before. Except the people that live there.
This laugh out loud science fiction pastiche is adapted from a 1960s BBC adventure series which, had it existed, would’ve been a classic of its genre. Until then you can enjoy it in written form in the first volume of Adventures into Space.
