To the death; that is the only thought in the minds of every human on the planet in one flash of time, and it remains indefinitely. When within close proximity to another, blinding rage, or the Ire, instantly overtakes the person and the "intruder" must be eliminated. No rhyme, no reason, only chaotic death and the seeming end of the world. While controls are quickly put into place, coordination must be fully remote and isolation for every breathing citizen on Earth becomes the immediate and hard-to-swallow rule.
It is in this isolated world where Wallace quickly learns to adapt, as he'd been isolated from people up to the moment of the Ire anyway. Still, he wants friends. Now with communication relegated to the sole use of technology, his job becomes exponentially more difficult. As it turns out, finding somebody you deem a friend can take you places you never knew you would go, nor would you want to go, nor would you want the outcome. Wallace discovers Eugene will always be his friend, even after Eugene displays his nature and becomes Wallace's bane. Friendship never dies, it just grows multiple heads. And in the days of the Ire, all heads roll when possible.
