Spring, 1950.

The city of Bristol is broken. The physical and emotional scars of World War Two are slow to heal.

Good people are struggling to get by, while an organised criminal underclass is thriving.

Days before his repatriation home, American GI Ed Grover pays a visit to a family who had shown a stranger an extraordinary kindness nine years earlier.

The family’s only son, Harry, has disappeared. In a bedsit, Grover finds the body of a young man with his throat cut.

Harry becomes the prime suspect.

After battling from Omaha Beach to the River Elbe to win the war, then spending five more years in a shattered Germany trying to win the peace, Grover knows more than most people about chancers, black marketers, extortionists and killers.

He stays in Bristol to find Harry.

And in the process comes up against the kind of people he thought he had left behind in Europe.

Jeff Dowson began his career working in the theatre as an actor and a director.
