Amalia has always been the weirdo at school. The kids bullied her for her gothic style, her shy persona and her lesbian mothers. They flee from a big city into a small town and hope for a better life. They move into an old house with a history and soon Amalia is about to find out that they are not alone.
There is something evil hiding behind the walls and in the mirror, something that is tempting Amalia into blind revenge to all those who bullied here. People start to die, Amalia feels stronger. But then the wraths turns against her family. Will she find a way to forgive and stop the darkness around her? Or will the small town die in her anger?
"Amalia stared out the window of the jeep, watching raindrops race each other from the top to the bottom of the glass as the vehicle sped along. She liked to think that they were driving away from their troubles, but she was under no delusion that this town would be any different. The fact that they had just come out of the other side of a thick storm helped reinforce the idea in her head. As if her mother speeding slightly put them that much more ahead of all the terrible things that lingered in their old hometown.
The teenage girl sighed, trying not to think of how all of this had been thrust onto her so suddenly. She really hadn’t had a chance to decide how she felt one way or another, yet they were already en route to their try number two at this American dream thing.
She could still remember the night her mothers came into her room and explained that they were going to move. Like a video on repeat, she could see it with perfect clarity. Lorelai had been wearing one of her chiffon, ethereal nighties while Jada had still been dressed in her work out clothes. Their faces had been lined with concern, uncertainty and worry. They blamed themselves for the incessant bullying that had led to Amalia’s acting out against in school, and then her subsequent getting kicked out. Amalia wasn’t sure whether they were right or not. Kids at school teased her for her gothic fashion style, and eyeliner heavy make up as much as they did for her two lesbian mommies. It was more probable that she was never meant to fit in.
Like some sort of infection, or terrible virus, the student body would always single her out and try to push her out of the system entirely.
Either way, her moms thought a new start in a town where no one knew who they were would do Amalia good. Although she didn’t think it would make much of a difference, the teenager was grateful for at least a little relief from the constant torture of her peers. There was always a calm before a storm as new people figured out exactly which box they could shove you into."
