At 15, Beverly Ashby has never left the Virginia plantation where she was brought up by her mother and her great-uncle Athol Selden, who served as an Admiral in the Civil War. Until recently, she and her twin were tutored at home, but now it is time for her brother to follow neighbor Archie Carey to a boarding school for boys and tomboy Beverly is expected to attend a boarding school for young ladies, Leslie Manor, fortunately located only ten miles from Kilton Hall, the boys' school. Finding herself among 60-70 girls and a dozen teachers, not all of whom are friendly, is a shock for the warm-hearted, spontaneous girl but eventually she will adapt and enjoy school.
