A new area of research featuring a study of mid-14th-century horse inventories for information on the identities, status and attitudes of the English aristocracy who undertook military service. Whilst exploring the potential of the full range of 14th-century military records, the author focuses in particular on the horse inventories, documents which offer detailed lists of men-at-arms and their appraised war-horses. The inventories are primarily of value as a guide to the owner's social and military status, from wealthy earls to humble esquires.
