In 1886, North America is a contentious confederation of independent republics vying for economic and political dominance. Christopher "Kit" Merryweather and Greta Singleton are childhood friends in St. Louis, a city powered by alchemical magic and mechanical wonders. When Kit is captured by wealthy industrialist Evelyn DeWinter, whom the papers call the Snow Queen, Greta knows she must do whatever it takes to find him.

Evelyn is determined to build a machine that will grant her endless youth and absolute power, while plunging the world into a new ice age: the Eternity Engine. She wants Kit's remarkable tinkering ability to make it work. Told to abandon all hope, Greta refuses to give up on Kit.
