The Reigate Poisoning Case, as recorded in the notebooks of Dr. Watson, transcribed and edited in the collection entitled Notes from the Dispatch-Box of John H. Watson MD, appeared to confuse two separate cases, and came to a conclusion that, while it may have satisfied Sherlock Holmes, did not form a satisfactory ending, at least in the opinion of Hugh Ashton, the editor.
As it turns out, another notebook came to light, which contained an account of the events of six months later connected with this case. The conclusion, as published here, is more shocking, and at the same time more conventionally "Sherlockian" than the original case, and should be regarded as compulsory reading for those who have read and wondered at what was originally believed to be the solution to the mystery of the death of Madame Montpensier's daughter.
