Multiple sclerosis is a chronic neurological disorder affecting the central nervous system, and affects an estimated 2.5 million people worldwide, 400,000 in the US and 85,000 in the UK. Two-three times as many women as men have MS. The cause is unknown but genetic factors may be implicated. This book looks at how the right diet may improve the health of those with MS. In particular, it looks at the Best Bet Diet, a recent eating plan popular among those with MS in the UK, USA, Canada and Australia who at present rely on web-based information. Studies on nutritional therapy for MS go back to 1950, showing that diet was helpful in 95% of cases. Further studies suggest that MS symptoms could be improved by eating more omega 6 fatty acids such as those from sunflower oil, and omega 3 fatty acids contained in fish oils.
