The Symbolism of Churches and Church Ornaments: A Translation of the First Book of the Rationale Divinorum Officiorum
The review from Amazon.com reviewer
George MacDonald (the author of THE PRINCESS AND THE GOBLIN, THE LIGHT PRINCESS, AT THE BACK OF THE NORTH WIND, THE GOLDEN KEY, LILITH, and many others--C. S. Lewis once wrote that he considered George MacDonald to be his master) said in his classic fantasy novel PHANTASTES that every truly wise man had read Durandus' RATIONALE. That sentence in a book by a theologian and Christian novelist of MacDonald's caliber set me off in search of a copy: I found it in the research library of one of the most prestigious universities on the west coast. It was one of the most amazing and fascinating reads I have experienced--and a mind-opening experience: truly character-shaping and personality-changing. It is a translation into English of the original Latin document commisioned by the pope in 1296 to be written as an official rationale of the Roman Catholic Church: the first volume, THE SYMBOLISM OF CHURCHES AND CHURCH ORNAMENTS, was certainly the volume MacDonald intended. It is a study of all the symbolism in the Roman Catholic Church's vestures, architecture, rituals, and traditions and all their roots in symbolism in the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. All of MacDonald's literature is rife with this symbolism, as is much of the work of C. S. Lewis and his colleague and friend J. R. R. Tolkien--and even MacDonald's personal friend Lewis Carroll. I personally wrote a significant number of comments--and questions--in the margin of my copy and then sent it on to my uncle who is a professor at a Christian college--who also found it equally enthralling and informative. Strongly recommended read to anyone who is either a student of literature or theology--or a scholar in any branch of the humanities.
