Delline and Phina have just turned fifteen and their parents are letting them go hunting in the high meadows, further up the mountains above Winterwood, their village home. They are excited to go on a hunting trip without adult supervision for the first time. As they set off, Ryant, the village bully finds out what they are planning. Humiliated by Delline’s constant refusal to accept his advances, he decides he will go on a mountain hunt of his own. Gathering some of his gang, he sets off after the girls. All the teenagers have surprises in store for them.

This storyline introduces three of the characters that will play pivotal roles in the forthcoming series of books outlining their adventures in the strange, dangerous and primal world set sometime in the future, after the devastating Famine War.
