A wealthy, elderly matron adopts a scruffy tomcat and while she is away on a trip her jealous butler tries very hard to destroy all nine of the cat's lives. Adapted from 'La mère Michel et son chat' by Émile de la Bédollière. The original French story is based on a French nursery rhyme from the 1820s, 'C'est la mère Michel'.
Excerpt:
These words produced a magical effect; they transformed the tormentors, into liberators: the cat was nearly suffocated by those, who now disputed the honour of capturing him. At last a modern Hercules seized the cat, and presented him, half dead, to the Countess.
Thank you, my good boy, said the Coun tess; here. Is the promised reward.
Giving him a louis d'or, fresh from the mint, she then added 3 Pray relieve the poor ani mal from his cumbersome burden.
