Gritta von Rattenzuhausbeiuns, a young aristocratic girl, is sent by her step-mother to a convent, where she escapes and goes on a number of adventures with her friends. Written around 1845 by Bettina von Arnim (1789-1859) and her daughter Gisela (1827-1889) at the height of German Romanticism, it is a comical fairy tale novel that also satirizes the genre, Robinson Crusoe , Western philosophy, and sexist gender roles.
