The American Expeditionary Forces or A. E.F. was the United States military force sent to Europe in World War I. The A. E.F. fought alongside allied forces against Imperial German forces. The A. E.F. helped the French defend the Western Front during the Aisne Offensive in May 1918, and fought its major action in the Meuse- Argonne offensive in the fall of 1918. The first American troops, who were called aDoughboysa by other Allied troops, arrived in Europe in June 1917. However the A. E.F. did not fully participate at the front until October, when the 1st Infantry Division, one of the best-trained divisions of the A. E.F., entered the trenches at Nancy.
