Born in Ireland in 1919, Will Manley was eleven when he discovered his ability to heal other humans, an extraordinary turn of events that might have unnerved his parents, had Will not come into the world under equally extraordinary circumstances. His young mother vowed that his conception had been immaculate, and on the evening following Will’s birth, when a group of mysterious beings arrive to abduct Will, she and his stepfather are forced to flee their village and raise Will as discretely as possible.

In 1941, after receiving a premonition that he interprets to be his calling, Will travels to North Africa to assist in the war effort, but is hunted down and attacked by the same creatures who had tried to abduct him as an infant. Will is turned into one of their kind – predatory creatures scheming to reign over the world and all that lies beyond it – but Will’s transformation is not as routine as his new maker had hoped it would be. Will remains conflicted by the inherent beliefs that guided him throughout his life. His acquired hunger for feeding on humans is challenged by the impulse he feels to heal his victims, and his carnal desire for the temptress named Satiah is something he is unable guard his innocence from.

When Will seeks out answers to what he has become and why he was originally put on the earth, he finds a millennia-old trail of concealed events, with a history of good versus evil dating back to creation that is not quite as black and white as he once perceived it.
