A college student longing for greatness realizes her reflection is alive when she gets dragged into a centuries long battle to keep monstrous leeches from destroying her world. Action and adventure, she expected; falling in love in a way only Narcissus might understand, not so much.

Jess always hated mirrors, and when her reflection reveals itself to be a creature from another dimension, her loathing seems justified, but the creature - an Aisling - has spent centuries guarding her world from species far darker who longed for what humanity so easily had. In a race against time, interdimensional zombies, and light-hungry leeches, Jess stumbles further and further from what she's known, and the reflection she hated becomes someone entirely new. Someone she can't help but start to love.

Created centuries ago, her Aisling's first form was a male philosopher, but he's guarded countless humans, taking their forms and never having a name or face of his own. Then Jess gives him a name - Kilpeni. She allows him to design his own face, accepting whatever form he presents to her as his own rather than a cheap imitation. Made to be a soldier, Kilpeni never understood the flights of fancy his peers had. He'd been happy that way. Passion drove the Aisling who worked beside him to sacrifice - to becoming the stones which helped to keep the outer dimensions from breaking into the Core World - Jess's World. They died for love of one thing or another, so when he starts to feel for Jess, he's terrified for the first time in millennia.

From the core through the outer dimensions, the pair must work together to save the universe, but an Aisling and a human could never be together, could they? It is a tragedy already told. Narcissus futile romance with his reflection.
