In the dark shadow of Ceres, at the edge of our Solar system, lurks a huge, powerful Starship, although built to transport hundreds, its only crew now is an Artificial Intelligence tasked with finding sentient populated worlds. Earth is its recent find. Such worlds must provide one representative to stand before the Council to justify membership in the Council of Worlds. Rejection means that world is cast into “Vassal” status, a slave world stripped of its wealth, and ruled by a powerful alien administration. Who will stand before the Council? The ship’s A.I. makes that call, a random scan, averaging mature, intelligent human prospects, and dispassionately, it picks one. Irreversible and non-negotiable. Leaders and politicians are rejected. Only the average man qualifies. Its pick, a USAF Captain (ret.) and airline pilot, Sean Flynn. A senior citizen now retired in Palm Springs looking for a last mission. He didn’t expect this one.

Out on a hot desert trail in the Indian Canyons of Palm Springs, an L.A. plainclothes Policewoman, Doris Lang, covered in tattoos and body piercings considers a quick end, but dozes off in the heat. The potential act and the nap are both interrupted by Sean who walks those trails a few times a month. Within a few weeks, they are both 257 million miles from Earth having a conversation with an A.I. asking “Why me?” and wondering what can Earth offer to justify membership to a consortium of Worlds that has Starships commanded by Artificial Intelligence?
