Number 7 in the Balum Series Westerns.

When U.S. Marshal Pete Cafferty asks Balum to escort a prisoner to Texas, his answer is a firm no. It doesn't matter how easy the job is or how much money he stands to make. Balum's not interested. Then he's told about Sara Sanderson. As it turns out, the woman who fleeced him of ten thousand dollars, who defrauded and murdered multiple young men in Denver, has relocated to the very city at the end of Cafferty's request: San Antonio, Texas.

Balum agrees. With Joe as his partner, the job should be easy. The prisoner will ride in back of a reinforced stagecoach. He'll be shackled hand and foot. A simple trip.

But escorting a convict one thousand miles across a lawless country is never simple. Though Balum figures he'll spend his days chewing tobacco and his nights seducing women, what he doesn't know is that his prisoner's brothers have escaped from jail. They're coming to free their brother, and Balum is right in their way.
