On vacation from England to West Virginia, Marianne Delaney's husband is killed in a car crash that leaves her stranded and alone in the countryside of Mingo County. After stumbling into an Iroquois cave, she's catapulted back in time to 1897. When she discovers she can't return to her own time without great cost to her own life, Marianne's real nightmares begin. She struggles to adapt among strangers alien to her culture and beliefs. Her skills as a midwife see her accused of witchcraft, and her growing attraction to Elias Wood, the eldest son of the family who offer her refuge, earns her the animosity and obsession of Singular Devereux, a man so consumed with hatred for Elias, he'll stop at nothing to make Marianne his own.
