Excerpt from The Heroides of Ovid: Epistles I. And XIII.; With Notes

While still young, he, with his brother Lucius, who was exactly a year older than himself, was sent to Rome to te ceive their education. Lucius was destined for the bar, but died at the early age of twenty. Ovid studied rhetoric under Arellius Fuscus and Porcius Latro, but the indolent boy spent the hours which he should have devoted to jurisprudence in writing love-son gs and fugitive pieces of poetry. Ovid's father discouraged the cultivation of his poetical talents, as tending to poverty; but all in vain. The full though easy flowing current of his genius would find vent in numbers, whenever he tried to write plain prose. Havmg completed his education at Athens, he travelled with the poet Macer in Asia and Sicily.
