After years of poverty on an Indian reservation, teenager Olivia Carter has been given the chance for a new life among the wealthy elite of Manhattan. Desperate to escape the traumatic secrets of her childhood, Olivia becomes a championship swimmer, but a violent sexual attack by her only friend sends her spiralling out of control.

Sent to a rehabilitation program in Utah, she realises she must confront her past and her addictions, and comes to experience friendship and love for the first time. Her newfound stability is threatened, however, by a death in the group and the ethics of the close bond that has formed between herself and a young doctor.

As a vulnerable Olivia returns to Manhattan, she has to face up to the life she wanted to leave behind and make the choice between addiction and love. And when tragedy strikes, Olivia must ask herself, ‘Where will life take you when you want to die?’
