In the near future, the vast majority of humanity is dead, wiped out by a new strain of pneumonic plague and the resulting downfall of society. A brave but inexperienced band of CDC specialists sets out to find the one hope to stop the virus' mutation and eventual victory over all human life, a 102-year old man so viciously cranky as to care less whether his own species lives or dies. In a world gone backwards, when all our tech and industry is so much rusting garbage and the survivors battle each other for food and weapons, their mission looks doomed to failure.
