Je m'appelle Jean Gilles. J'entrais dans ma onzieme annee, lorsqu'un matin d'hiver, ma mere decida de me conduire chez la grand'tante aux soins de qui l'on me confiait habituellement pour les vacances. J'y devais demeurer quelque temps; une coqueluche qui s'achevait etait le pretexte de ce sejour, a l'idee duquel j'aurais eprouve bien de la joie, si je ne sais quoi dans sa brusque nouvelle, ne m'eut empeche de m'abandonner a ce sentiment.

Mon pere ne parut pas au dejeuner; j'appris qu'il se trouvait las et prenait du repos.
