The Apprentice Queen. A queen of ancient Egypt is forced to choose between her own son and her lover, the son's wife. This is a story about three powerful women of ancient Egypt. Old Queen Sekma gains control of the kingdom through intrigue and political maneuvering. She ruthlessly rules Egypt from behind the scenes. Mitti, a girl taken from her family at ten years old, becomes Sekma’s unwilling apprentice. Sekma manipulates the lives of the people of Egypt and carries on a bizarre breeding program for the royalty. When Mitti is grown she bears a son through this breeding program. Later she becomes queen through marriage to an incompetent king. Nyserra, a young noble woman, is chosen to marry Mitti’s son, but Mitti and Nyserra fall in love. They both realize their love is forbidden, but their love is too strong to deny. Time passes; politics, intrigues, and manipulations occur. Treachery is always a danger. Sekma loses power to Mitti. A time comes when Nyserra and Mitti, who still love each other deeply, become political enemies. Mitti is faced with a terrible choice. In the end Mitti comes to understand why the old Queen Sekma was as ruthless as she was, and arrives at a kind of admiration for her.
