Anne Hunnicut has been sent to Webster, Kentucky, to shut down a textile mill. She’s surprised to discover that a laidback country good ol’ boy, Buck LaSalle, who comes to her rescue is the same savvy union leader who’s determined to keep the mill open and his hometown alive and prospering.

At first, Anne and Buck agree to disagree about the factory because everything else about them is a perfect match. He admires her ambition and intelligence. She longs to feel his sense of belonging somewhere--to have deep, deep roots in the fertile backwoods of Kentucky.
