George Meredith (1828-1909) was a popular English writer of the Victorian and Edwardian periods. Trained as an attorney, Meredith abandoned the practice of law and turned to writing in his twenties. His early works, short novels and poetry, appeared in the 1850s. While his output was steady, his first truly successful work was DIANA OF THE CROSSWAYS, published in 1885. He worked as a publisher's reader for much of his career, become acquainted with many of the leading literary figures of his time inlcuding Thomas Hardy, Robert Louis Stevenson, George Gissing, and J.M. Barrie. By the early 1900s, his output had diminished considerably; his final novel CELT AND SAXON, appeared in 1910, the year after his death.
