The gripping second novel in the Oathsworn series, charting the adventures of a band of Vikings looking for the return of the Rune Sword that will lead them to Attila’s Hoard
A band of brothers, known as the Oathsworn, committed only to each other and feared by many, rises again, setting sail on the wolf sea in search of vengeance and glory.
Washed up in a hostile city, battle-weary and out of luck, the Oathsworn lie waiting for their reluctant leader, the young Orm, to bring them back once more to wealth and warfare. But Orm's prized sword - the legendary Rune Serpent - is gone, stolen by the rapacious Starkad, and with it the runes writ upon the hilt that only Orm can decipher.
The Oathsworn embark on a dangerous mission to reclaim their precious sword as they pursue the elusive Starkad across the turbulent Wolf Sea. Unafraid to fight and cunning in the ways of men, they wreak violence and bloody revenge on their enemies.
Caught up in the treacherous battles in the East between the rulers of Constantinople, aided by hordes of Viking mercenaries, and the Arabs, their adventures will take them from Greece to Jerusalem, across the treacherous Wolf Sea where only the hunting hungry dare set sail.
Epic adventure broad in scope and bloody in action, The Wolf Sea is the stunning second novel in the Oathsworn series.
Review'Narrated by Low with all the gritty, down-to-earth realism that breathed such life into his first novel, and shows just why historical fiction is one of today's most rapidly-growing genres' Yorkshire Evening Post Praise for The Whale Road 'A company of warriors, desperate battles, an enthralling read' Bernard Cornwell 'A fantastic book, one of the best I have read for years. There's a wonderful earthiness to proceedings and he creates a tangible sense of being there. There's a sturdy, lyrical and epic quality about the writing which makes it feel like the kind of saga a Viking would recount in his old age' Simon Scarrow 'A stirring Viking series of blockbuster battles and religious intrigue' Publishing News 'All the right ingredients are firmly in place!above all there is the storyline itself; told in an earthy, rough-and-ready stylewhich perfectly compliments this saga for the 21st Century' Yorkshire Evening Post 'A fascinating read' The Glasgow Herald 'The Hangman humour of the band of sworn brothers gives Low's epic but brutal tale real humanity and the detail of 10th century life is wonderfully vivd. The action is fast and furious!shockingly believably so. Low's debut novel hits the mark with maximum impact' Bridlington Today
About the AuthorROBERT LOW covered the Vietnam war at age 19 and swore he would never do anything as stupid ever again. Since then, he has earned his living as a journalist safely in Scotland, with occasional lapses of judgement taking him to Sarajevo, Romania and Kosovo until common-sense, age and the concerns of his wife and daughter prevailed.

4.0 out of 5 stars A vast improvement on the first!, May 11, 2009
By Amazon Customer
Format:Hardcover
Now this is a much better work by Low, his first novel The Whale Road had a few major teething problems, the writing wasn't as good as some of the major players in the historical fiction world. Now this novel brings the reader into the world of the Vikings and the early Medieval era, you can really get a sense of what it must be like to have lived in this time, the wars and religious turmoil of the time.
In this novel we see Orm as captain of the remaining Othsworn, not long after his escape from the Steppes he finds himself in trouble after having the great sword of Attila stolen. This finds himself and his warriors traveling half way around the world from Greece to Antioch on to Jerusalem fighting in Greeks, Turks and slavers. Will Orm the bear slayer survive to hold the sword of Atilla or will he and his warriors be drinking in Odin's hall come battles end?
If you like historical fiction then give this book a go, the series has a lot of promise. The third book in this series has just come out, I can wait to read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down... June 20, 2008
By Bookie
Format:Hardcover
Picked this one up at the library on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. Awesome, swashbuckling tale. Great characters. Surprising twists of fate. The historical backdrop of the East-West versions of Christianity competing for converts was particularly interesting.
Check out the author's website. He actually participates in Viking-style reenactments. One wonders how many of his real comrades inspired members of the Oathsworn.
The best part is, the second book in the series has recently been released!

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping historical novel spun with fantasy and a vision of the past. July 22, 2009
By Thom Styron
Format:Hardcover
As I am getting "long in the tooth", I have read much about my Viking heritage, many times maligned by biased writers; not so with Rob Low, whose visions of the past tells me he has the help of Odinn's Ravens. Low's gripping descriptions of close encounter battle, the strong smells of blood and guts, the screams and curses of raging warriors affirms his first hand knowledge of his writings. It is often difficult to relive those experiences, but Low shares, with his readers, the reality of warfare...and he does this while keeping us enthralled in the saga's journey through history, a thousand years old. As a direct descendent of Styrbjorn Sterki and (his father-in-law) Harald Bluetooth Gormson, I await the next book, as the Oathsworn sail to the Northlands...to what I expect will be encounters with Bluetooth and his Christ Followers.

4.0 out of 5 stars because of the History Channel and my love of JRR Tolkien and his interest in the Norse ... November 21, 2014
By Amazon Customer
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm on a bit of a Viking kick right now, because of the History Channel and my love of JRR Tolkien and his interest in the Norse sagas. I've read a number of fiction and non-fiction books on the subject, and the Oathsworn series is easily the best. Mr. Low does a masterful job of informing and entertaining at the same time. He weaves the series into the history of the time with great attention to historical accuracy (insofar as that can be achieved on a subject so shrouded in legend). I especially enjoyed the way he depicts the clash of various religious cultures, and the time he takes to introduces terms from a wide variety of languages. His writing style takes some getting used to, but once you adapt to it the story flows along beautifully. We are fortunate to have someone of Mr. Low's wit and intelligence and storytelling prowess writing on such a fascinating topic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Sequel to The Whale Road May 30, 2009
By Ronin
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
In the Wolf Sea, we continue the adventures of Orm Rurikson and his Oathsworn as they make their way to Miklagard (Constantinople as the Vikings knew it) and compete with their arch rival Starkad, who's shocking destiny is revealed in the end. Low does an excellent job describing the death of the old gods at the hands of christianity, a theme that is appropriately conveyed in the first 2-books of the series. I don't want to give away too much of this very enjoyable book. This is good historical fiction where the characters are fictitious and the times and places are brought back to life with compelling detail. Robert Low does his historical homework, and the result is a high quality Viking tale. I have his 3rd book "The White Raven" on the way...can't wait.

4.0 out of 5 stars A dark and beautiful read. January 20, 2015
By Regina M. Fried
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is not a book I would typically read, on any account. But I thought I'd challenge myself with something new, upon recommendation by a friend. It's beautifully written, with much detail and suspense. I was so filled with visuals and emotions throughout the whole story, it was very moving. It took me a while to read it, as the language is unique and it's occasionally hard to follow who exactly he's talking about at the moment. I did enjoy the book, and have ordered the rest of the series.
