Maxim and his friends are now safely at Pitford, knowing their first task is to rescue the recently deposed Kothian King. With the nation divided, King Gorius of Bosaria seeks to push home his advantage, attacking the poorly defended towns and villages. Now he knows the enemy has their own magicians, he realises perhaps things will not be quite as easy as he first envisaged. With the help of a new friend, he seeks out old alliances, and more importantly a great weapon that will secure him his victory.

With Maxim's powers coming to the fore, the threat he poses to both sides becomes apparent, and he soon finds himself the focus of unwanted attention.
