Jack Stewart, aged 10-12, not sure we ever find out, lives in the volcanic area of Taupo, Central North Island, New Zealand. His parents are both working all hours to get a deposit together on a long distance truck. He has no friends except a stray cat and is lonely. He meets a man living rough and starts learning about the previous eruption when the lake was formed in 200 AD. As the story progresses the man known as Fluoro teaches him to meditate or transport and they find themselves in the time of the explosion and try to save some of the birds and a bat. The stray cat also transports with them and helps with some of the solutions. They find each time they return to real time some of the events have a parallel with the adventures from the past.

Jack also has problems attending or listening in class and there are 2 bullies/beginner criminals who have to be dealt with as well.
