This is an excellent book! The characters are well developed and engaging. It is amazing all that Ellen has endured. Richard rescues her from an evil man. Richard is so kind and giving even though he has suffered unspeakable things. Gavin sees Ellen and instantly wants her. Has to have her, but Ellen has to keep her past a secret. After accidentally killing her husband when he attacks her, Thomasina Waxton, Viscountess of Greenborough, flees and starts a new life and the promise of true love.

Thomasina withstood the abuse her husband Greenborough dished out, ever since she was forced to marry him at age 14. Fleeing in terror after accidentally killing him in self-defense, she is rescued at night on the road by Baron Richard Chambray. Chambray suffered a crippling wound to his manhood when he was captured by the Turks, a secret she will come to guard with her life. As she climbs into his warm carriage on the way to London, she is comforted by this kind handsome man as he holds her on the way to his grand stately home.

The man chasing her is a friend of her deceased husband. The vicious albino the Duke of Hunt nearly caught her that terrible night as he chased her shouting, “Murderess!” He knew all about their loveless marriage and the sadistic Hunt taunted her with the threat of rape, even joking in front of her husband, “I’ll gladly do what you’re incapable of doing, Greenborough.”

If the Duke of Hunt finds her he will kill her, but not before he despoils her.

Chambray tells Thomasina she is safe if she becomes an actress at the King’s Theater, under the King’s protection. Thomasina, with the hope of a brighter life in front of her, dyes her hair a beautiful shade of red and takes the stage name Ellen Scarlet. For once in her life she is loved and feels safe.

But Gavin Merrick soon comes to town under an assumed name with the mission to track down his former sister-in-law, who viciously murdered his brother. The moment Gavin sees the now famous and beguiling Ellen Scarlet this notorious womanizer pursues her with all his heart. He soon makes the most shocking of discoveries. This mysterious, elusive Ellen has captured his heart! What will happen if he finds out who she really is?

“I’m a selfish man, Ellen. I want you to myself.”

“What we have is enough.”

”When I think of sailing in the spring, without you at my side, Ellen, I wonder.” He glances at her, his eyes intense. “Will you—”

“Your place is in the Colonies and mine is here. Don’t talk of permanence.” It just can’t be.

Gavin hears the sincerity in her voice. She is right. The last thing he needs is a wife. Look at what happened to his brother Waldron….
