Denis and Vince Carroll are a pair of screw ups. The proprietors of a dive bar in a dried up southern town, Vince is doing five to ten while Denis is just trying to hold on. Meanwhile he's feeling the pressure, both from his disillusioned wife and the degenerate Goodwin brothers who want to see the Carrolls back in the drug trade.

The Goodwins, however, have troubles of their own. Years ago, one of their nieces witnessed her sister being sexually assaulted by Clay Goodwin. More recently she watched as her fiancé was gunned down by one of the Carrolls. Now she is determined to get revenge on the Goodwins and the Carrolls. How much better if she can literally kill two birds with one stone?

In this darkly humorous small-town noir everyone has something to hide and nothing is as it seems.

PRAISE FOR A TASTE OF SHOTGUN

One of Crime Fiction Lover's Hot Summer Reads (2018)

"Classic noir" -- Jedidiah Ayres, author of Peckerwood, Fierce Bitches

"Orlet's setting in a small American town is spot-on. Even the two-bit crooks and hoodlums are just that, small-time. They fly below the police's radar with their penny-ante drug deals and as long as they don't get blatant with their activity or start beating people, their criminal lives go on. Orlet's "A Taste of Shotgun" is a great view of small-time crime and it's working-class in America roots as people struggle to keep a roof over their heads and feed their families." -- David Nemeth, Unlawful Acts
