Lynch (1844-1928) was born in London of Irish parentage. During his time at University College, Oxford he boxed as a middleweight and captained the boxing team in his last year. When forced to give up a medical career on health grounds, he turned to journalism, serving as Boxing Correspondent for Field & Sport and publishing a number of books on boxing. He proved to be a writer of wider depth, producing book reviews and articles on antique furniture. In addition to his writing he was an accomplished caricaturist, contributing drawings to numerous periodicals and illustrating several books. This history of boxing, from the early days of bare knuckle prize-fighting to the professionals of the early 20th century, was first published in 1922. Illustrated throughout.
