General George Washington's new Continental Army has suffered a series of defeats against the British. The enlistments of many troops are due to expire at the end of the month. Without tents, enough food, warm clothing, or pay, Washington fears that men will abandon his army as winter closes in. On Christmas Eve of 1776, Washington decides to make a bold move against the enemy across the Delaware.
