The Color of Angels

Proudly independent, artist Tatiana Ludvik is determined to carry on with her work despite the illness stealing her physical strength. Fleeing the concerns of her family in London, she heads for the Devon countryside in a car packed with paints, and a dog named Moon, seeking the colors that illness has leached from her life, her art, and her heart.

From multi-award-winning writer and editor Terri Windling, this 13,000-word story is rich in myth, music, the magic of Dartmoor, the folklore of deer, and the strength we can find in love and art when the world seems to crumble around us. First published in the anthology The Horns of Elfland (Kushner, Sherman, Keller, eds., 1997), the story takes place in the same fictional universe as Windling's novel The Wood Wife, but can be easily read alone. (Readers of the novel may remember Tat Ludvik as Maggie Black's best friend. This story, set mainly in Devon, takes place before the novel, which is set mainly in Tucson.)
