Under the invisible guiding hand of the High Mage Insmith Crissing, peace has reigned. Though, with peace comes a cost. The Five Nations have become complacent and fat. The people have grown weak and indulgent. Myths have replaced their actual history. However, peace can only last so long. War looms close.

Vyra's life tumbles into uncaring chaos as the teen from an isolated village is dragged into the wider world. Freedic's past as a ranger of Auverance comes back to haunt him. And Council Mage Forec defends a world for which he feels nothing, out of fear of repercussions from the High Mage.
