MAURICE POLYDORE MARIE BERNARD, COUNT MAETERLINCK [1862-1949] was a Belgian poet, playwright, and essayist. He wrote several plays for marionette theatre. He believed actors' mannerisms tainted the intent of the playwright. In 1903, he was awarded the Belgian government's Triennial Prize for Dramatic Literature. In 1911, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. In 1932, he was made a count by King Albert I. In 1948, the French Academy awarded him the Medal for the French Language.
