James Bruce (1730 - 94) was a Scottish traveller and travel writer who spent many years in North Africa and Ethiopia where he traced the origins of the Blue Nile. Issued in 1790, this five volume account of his travels in the Horn of Africa from 1768-73 includes his first-hand observations on Ethiopian history and culture and detailed descriptions of all he saw. Whilst his sensational stories were ridiculed by scholars and other travellers at the time, later explorers have confirmed the substantial accuracy of his Abyssinian travels. Volume I of 5, with illustrations.
