Fourth in Gary Phillips' Ivan Monk PI series. (Booklist: A great hardboiled PI for the 90s.) Monk is present when an old friend dies in the local barbershop. When Monk tries to learn more about the man's past, Monk suddenly finds himself on the search of a mythical recording by blues great, Charlie Patton; and the death of two young white women in Mississippi in the 60s -- supposedly at the hands of a black militant leader.
