An account of the battle of Iwo Jima, in which the American Marines stormed, and eventually took, the Japanese occupied island. Iwo Jima was the 'gateway' to Japan, and gave US bombers and fighters a much shorter run to the Japanese mainland. Iwo Jima was characterised by the bloodiest fighting in the Pacific theatre, with very heavy losses on each side.
