The Xifarians, a race of ruthless intergalactic nomads have held Maia's home world hostage for three long decades. No child her age is safe - each year they are herded into the Xifarian mining camps on the frozen moon of Ti, from which no one ever returns. These are the tyrants who had led Maia's mother into dishonoring her family. Maia has carefully planned her life around escaping their clutches.

She does not expect being dragged into the Xifarians' dubious peace initiative nor plan on visiting their galaxy roving planet-spaceship of Xif. She never imagines meeting or befriending a Jjord - the reclusive people from the under-ocean colonies. But all that is about to happen, and Maia's life is about to change forever ...
